Exploratory architects in the 20th Century have set the stage for a tranformation in the industry. Their novel ideas on modularity and industrialization are augmented with our growing understanding of sustainability and new technologies. Armed with this vast historical knowledge we ask ourselves if we can re-examine simple domestic architectures. Our study, ZIP, explores these themes of modularity and living with a more historic material, timber.

1. Folding geometry

We examined geometric origami patterns as the folding could enhance load bearing capabilities while maintaining surface planarity which is critical when using timber. It's expensive to bend! Through a series of simple folding and creasing operations, we can design spatially complex units, extracting the most in 3D from 2D.
